A True Test of Patience

A true test of patience is
when a mother
Holding her toddler’s pant, one eye
On the clock
Squats on the floor, waiting
While he decides on the
leg that’ll go in first,
yain ki thain
Meaning this or that
Right or left.

In an unexpected turn of events however,
he decides no leg will
go into the pant after all
Instead he proceeds to calculate
the tenacity of cotton
By stuffing toys one by one
into the pant.

Unaware that what it is truly
Being calculated is
the breaking point, not of fabric
But of Amma’s patience.
