Day 1 – A new beginning

Happy new year!

The title says day 1 even though it is not the 1st day of the year. But it is the first day for many other things. It is the first working day and my first post for 2016! Also, I want to post something on this blog every day this year, starting today! So day 1 for that as well. This is not going to be easy, but I am excited.

I have tried multiple times to be a regular at updating this blog but laziness always gets the better of me. Laziness combined with never liking what I write has resulted in a huge collection of posts in the drafts section. This year is going to be different (I can feel it!). I have decided to go ahead and publish articles even when they are not perfect. The more time I spend editing an article, the less I feel like publishing it. So, cheers to 2016 and my goal of writing everyday!

I had a very fruitful day at work today. I had been stuck with an issue in my code for the past couple of (working) days. I had spent a lot of time trying to understand what is causing the bug without any success. Today, within few minutes of reviewing my code, I was able to fix it. What was different today?

It was a new beginning, a fresh mind. The last few times I had looked at the code, I was tired. I wasn’t thinking clearly because I wanted to fix the code and I kept going at it without breaks. This approach has never worked for me. Yet I succumb to debugging continuously and getting fatigued. Today, I decided to work on it first thing in the morning when my mind was fresh (thanks to the holidays!). Within half an hour I had not only fixed the bug that was bothering me, but I had also completed a bunch of other items on my list.

Sometimes when you are stuck with an issue for a long time, instead of spending more time on it and getting frustrated, take a break. Even a short break can help in many ways. One way of working that helps me a lot is the Pomodoro technique. It is great way to be productive and get work done efficiently.

Have a great, productive 2016!
