(Monday Musings: Random reflections on a Monday evening train ride home. Hopefully this post is the first in a series of many more)
If we want something, we must work hard. We all know that. But hard work is underestimated. We hear success stories everyday. People who rose from poverty to riches, public speakers who were introverted and shy, leaders who were ridiculed, stand-up comedians who weren’t funny, award-winning authors whose books never sold. All these stories highlight the success, the end, the moral. But what we really need to hear is about failure, about those long days and dark nights that were part of each of these success stories, how they stood strong through the failures, believing in their goal and never giving up.
Never give up on a dream just because it will take time to finish it, the time will pass anyway.
To get something done, and done in the best way possible, you must give it everything you have. Half-hearted effort can never bring complete satisfaction. If you feel things are not working out for you, but someone else you know is successful in the same field/project, then they must be doing something you are not. Even if it a simple change in your daily routine, you cannot achieve it unless you put your heart and soul into it.
Set you goals high and don’t stop till you get there.
There will be days when it may seem like things will never get better. But, the darkest hour is before dawn. The strength to stay strong during those dark hours is something we need to work on. I have been reading about people I admire and respect, about their lives before achieving “success”. All these people have achieved recognition in different fields yet the stories are very similar. They have compromised somewhere to achieve their goal. They have all stepped out of their comfort zone. They have all faced failures. Failures which span days, months and even years. Having faith and working towards your goal when everything seems to be going wrong is hard. But if you believe in yourself and in your goal, your efforts will pay off. Success may not come when you want it to. You may have to go to bed disappointed every single day for a year. But when the day finally arrives, it will all be worth it. You will look back and thank yourself for hanging in there and not giving up.
When you feel like quitting, remember why you started.
